Have you ever had the feeling that a screw or nut connection was too tight or too loose? Never agin when you use a torque wrench.

Did you know that for all screws there is a recommended torque setting that corresponds with the screw size and type of thread? Your equipment handbook or repair manual will tell you or you can use a table that you will find in mechanics books or in the internet.

Torque is the product of the force applied to a wrench multiplied by the length of the wrench and measured either in Nm (Newtonmeter) or lbf.ft (pound-foot). Basically the longer the lever and the higher the force the higher is the torque. For a given thread a torque can easily be too low or too high so that a connection either comes loose or breaks due to overload. This is why professionals and experienced amateurs use torque wrenches to fix a connection with just the exact torque. 

The recommended torque settings are found in many repair manuals for machines, cars, bikes, motorcycles, solar panels, boats, yachts and alike. General recommendations are set by DIN EN and ISO standards, e.g. DIN 912 for metric screws with regular and fine pitches. Torque settings also differ depending on the material of the screw (plastic, steel, brass, aluminum) and whther the thread is dry or oiled. Sometimes it is also required to tighten the screws to a specific angle, e.g. on car crankshaft or camshaft bearings.

Hazet manufactures torque tools in their Remscheid plant in Germany, where they are made, assembled and calibrated. Each torque wrench comes with a individual serial number and calibration certificate.

What is the difference between all the Hazet torque tools and how do I pick one out of the table below?

1. The torque range. Hazet makes torque tools from 0.4 to 2,000 Nm. Pick the tools according to your requirements. A good starting point for general industrial use and most cars is 5-320 Nm, so a set of three wrenches will cover most jobs. If you work on bicycles, motorbikes and other equipment with small threads you want to go a little lower.

2. The precision. The release accuracy in regard to the scale value is 1-10% depending on size and quality of the wrench. The higher the precision, the higher is the uniformity of the results. Especially for delicate parts, serial production or many screws in one machine a higher precision is useful. Some wrenches are even available with the DAkkS certificate of calibration that is required or recommended when you work in the aviation or automobile industry, with new energy, wind turbines, offshore wind farms, solar modules or in the petrochemical industry oil and gas.

3. Tool connection. The wrenches either feature a reversible ratchet in 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" or 1" that take all Hazet sockets, e.g. 6-point, 12-point, TORX® or inhex screwdriver types. Or they have a 9x12mm or 14x18mm holder for insert tools, e.g. ring end and open end. Torque screwdrivers take 6.3mm (1/4") hex bits. Please note that insert tools define the length of the torque wrench. You can use non-Hazet inserts but make sure that you recalibrate the wrench if the length is different from Hazet inserts.
